For those seeking a perfect golf holiday Algarve in the south of the country has the greatest variety & quantity of resorts in the country. Many visitor base themselves in Vilamoura to play one of the several Oceanico courses along with some real gems like Vale do Lobo.

From this base it is also easy to take day-trips east to play Jack Nicklaus’ Monte Rei and the Quinta De Cima course. Alternatively, head west for some real gems like the Oceanico O’Connor course, the Oceanico Faldo (with its uniquely desert-style design course) or experience the challenging hill-side Parque Da Floresta with its magnificent views.

For a good mix of golf with culture many golfers settle in Lisbon and explore the surrounding Estoril region. There are a dozen golf resorts nearby along with some truly memorable courses. Praia d’El Rey is probably the most famous course but the challenging Quinta da Marinha has some wonderful holes and the tough links course at Troia is an adventure to get to (by ferry) and can play very long once the wind is up.

The tropical island of Madeira off the Portuguese/African coast only has three courses to play. Visitors mainly go for the great weather, volcanic scenery and ocean views. It is definitely a unique golfing experience playing the 27-hole Santo da Serra as it makes its way around volcanic hillsides and picturesque valleys.

Finally, the Oeste region is a little sparse in terms of golf courses. The area has only recently embraced golf and golf tourism. That said, if you want a holiday with scenic drives and quaint villages then the region will reward you as you seek out some the regions great courses such as Rainha Golf & Spa, Falesia d’El Rey, Vimeiro and Paimogo.

Mexican Culture

Mexican culture is a true melting pot. The original Mexicans were an Indian people with their own specific culture. Mexico also has strong Spanish ties indeed the language spoken is Spanish and the Christian religion and traditions are practiced throughout the whole country. Although there are still people of purely Mexican Indian descent and some of purely Spanish descent, the majority of the population is known as mestizo which is a combination of Mexican and Spanish.

The temperament of the people is very laid back and buses or trains do not always run on time. It sometimes seems that things can break down all too frequently as well. While this can be frustrating at first to the visitor, it’s best to try and sync with the mind set of the locals and try and relax. You’ll get there in the end!

Mexico is now an all year round holidays destination, although December is the busiest month of the year for beach visitors to Cancun and around. It would be advised to avoid the rainy season , which to all intents and purposes is summer, which runs from roughly June to October. During this time of the year, unexpected downpours can materialise out of nothing which could dampen your day at the beach. The best time of year to visit is probably November when the air is at it’s freshest and the the climate is quite pleasing.

Lanzarote has the good fortune to be far enough away from Africa to avoid the sand storms, but close enough to benefit from the warm water currents that flow by. It has only a few mountains and North-South tilt that means it is almost always 70 degrees and sunny. The island gets very little rainfall and the temperate breeze from Africa keeps the temperatures fairly consistent. It is, in other words, a golfer’s paradise.

There are two golf courses on the island. Costa Teguise and the Lanzarote Golf Resort. Costa Teguise is the older of the two, although it has been beautifully and lovingly maintained. Both courses are well designed, championship courses. Lanzarote Golf Resort benefits from the latest hydro-technology. With so little rainfall, the courses have to be very eco-conscious and the LGR employed the latest in sprinkler design and landscaping to ensure that what little water is needed is used to the utmost efficiency.

Along with this is the modern sports centre in the middle of the town which offers many different possibilities such as tennis or for the Spanish game of pelota. There are two swimming pools outdoors here and there is a heated swimming pool which is located not too far away from the marina, which has over 500 mooring points.  You will also find the Pilar de la Horadada golfing very enjoyable.

The cuisine in Pilar de la Horadada is very similar to the rest of the region. All because of the proximity to the sea, seafood is somewhat of a specialty. Fruit and vegetables are grown here in abundance and are extremely fresh. If you’re shopping for fruit and vegetables you will get great bargains and freshness at the regular local outdoor markets. The outdoor markets are held on the outskirts of the town once a week, and there are several outdoor markets located in the nearby cities of Torrevieja and Orihuela. Rice is an ingredient which is used in the region quite often. Not only is it used to make the famous paella dishes, it is also made into a sweet dish. This sweet dish is one of the local specialties and is known as arroz con leche which is a form of rice pudding. This can be especially nice if it is made from goats milk with a pinch of cinnamon and lemon peel added. Also, there are many different summer drinks which are normally made from natural ingredients.

The municipality of Pilar de la Horadada managed to get its independence from Orihuela only in 1986.

Pilar de la Horadada

The long history of Pilar de la Horadada runs all the way back to the Stone Age times when there were the first settlers here. There is also evidence of Roman occupation including the Roman road known as Via Augusta which runs past the town. The Moors, who were in the province for over four centuries, were eventually defeated by the Christians in the 13th century. Since independence, Pilar de la Horadada holds a yearly Fiesta to mark the occasion. It is one of the things not to be missed and definitely has to be added to the top of your to do list if you are going to visit Spain. Fiestas are held every year all over Spain and each town has its own version for you to enjoy.

Malaga is not only and important transport hub for plane, trains, automobiles and boats, but also an important example of a Spanish working town. The sprawl of Malaga can be quite unsightly at the best of times, but at it’s heart you will find a charming centre with a thriving shopping and café culture. Where people come, there are of course a great range of hotels for them to choose from also.

The increasing importance of this town for tourism means that there are great new hotels springing up all the time. Whilst you are in Malaga be sure to visit the Picasso Museum with its large collection of original artwork from this great artist. Picasso was born here and his legacy lives on through his foundation which is also based here. The museum is right in the centre of the town so you’ll easily be able to do a bit of shopping, get a coffee and a bite to each all under the glorious blues skies of the Andalucía sun. With over three hundred days of sunshine here a year and with mild temperatures all year round you can see why this is a great place to visit.

Being situated on the Bay of All Saints in Bahia, there are beaches aplenty for those who seek sun and sand.  Salvador’s location on the northeastern portion of Brazil and its proximity to the equator means visitors will have no trouble finding their warm, tropical getaway here.  For the more active, you might want to try the challenging and physically demanding martial art of Capoeira.  With its origins in slavery and thus the need of the slaves to disguise their deadly art from the slave masters, one can see today the mix of dance-like moves mixed with more overt fighting techniques.  Capoeira practitioners must be in tip top shape, exhibiting peak levels of speed, strength, flexibility, and balance.  Add in the creativity and you have a real Capoerista.  Not a pro like the ones you see in Salvador?  Have no fear, there are several schools which take on new students, making the difficult moves and maneuvers fun.  Still, expect to be sore afterwards if this is your first time!

Of course, the must-see place in the must-see city of Salvador must be Pelourinho, the old town situated on the upper level of the city.  Connected to the city below by means of the Salvador’s landmark, a giant elevator in the middle of the city, Pelourinho is the old colonial city with buildings from that period.  The facades are painted in bright colors, and the streets are of cobblestone.  Though it has become a major tourist attraction and thus has all the trappings of one, visitors to Pelourinho will still be delighted by its old-world charm.
