The young community of Pilar de la Horadada

Pilar de la Horadada is a small town in the South West of Spain. It is the town which is furthest south in the province of Alicante and on the Costa Blanca. Pilar de la Horadada is approximately 18 km distance from the city of Torrevieja. It is one of the youngest independent municipalities in the entire Valencian community. The town is well situated as a tourist resort being very close to the airport at Murcia and not too far away from Alicante airport. There are plenty of amenities regardless of what you are pursuing for your vacation and you will find the food absolutely wonderful.

There are over 4 km of white sandy beaches attached to Pilar de la Horadada which leaves the way open for you to choose between a relaxing day sunbathing or taking advantage of the town promenade. The sea itself is ideal for families because they are our no large waves to speak of. This means that paddling in the clear blue waters is going to be very safe. Along with this is the modern sports centre in the middle of the town which offers many different possibilities such as tennis or for the Spanish game of pelota. There are two swimming pools outdoors here and there is a heated swimming pool which is located not too far away from the marina, which has over 500 mooring points.  You will also find the Pilar de la Horadada golfing very enjoyable.

The cuisine in Pilar de la Horadada is very similar to the rest of the region. All because of the proximity to the sea, seafood is somewhat of a specialty. Fruit and vegetables are grown here in abundance and are extremely fresh. If you’re shopping for fruit and vegetables you will get great bargains and freshness at the regular local outdoor markets. The outdoor markets are held on the outskirts of the town once a week, and there are several outdoor markets located in the nearby cities of Torrevieja and Orihuela. Rice is an ingredient which is used in the region quite often. Not only is it used to make the famous paella dishes, it is also made into a sweet dish. This sweet dish is one of the local specialties and is known as arroz con leche which is a form of rice pudding. This can be especially nice if it is made from goats milk with a pinch of cinnamon and lemon peel added. Also, there are many different summer drinks which are normally made from natural ingredients.

The municipality of Pilar de la Horadada managed to get its independence from Orihuela only in 1986.

The long history of Pilar de la Horadada runs all the way back to the Stone Age times when there were the first settlers here. There is also evidence of Roman occupation including the Roman road known as Via Augusta which runs past the town. The Moors, who were in the province for over four centuries, were eventually defeated by the Christians in the 13th century. Since independence, Pilar de la Horadada holds a yearly Fiesta to mark the occasion. It is one of the things not to be missed and definitely has to be added to the top of your to do list if you are going to visit Spain. Fiestas are held every year all over Spain and each town has its own version for you to enjoy.
